Incident Resource Inventory System (IRIS) 6/20/07
NIMS Implementation Tips of the Week
20 June 2007
Incident Resource Inventory System (IRIS)
The Incident Resource Inventory System (IRIS) is a no-cost,
browser-based database management tool, developed within the frameworkof the NIMS, available to Federal, State/territory, tribal, and local officials to assist in meeting the NIMS compliance requirement for
inventorying FEMA-approved typed resources.
The benefits of IRIS include:
- Assisting communities to identify available emergency-oriented
resources during day-to-day and disaster operations.
- Systematically assisting communities with inventorying and typing of
resources in accordance with NIMS protocols while helping to identify
available resources to support emergency response operations.
- Creating typing for Tier 2 assets (or resources not currently included
in the FEMA 120) and inventory them. This will assist communities in the
management of emergency-oriented resources during both day-to-day
emergency operations, as well as in response to a crisis or disaster.
- Providing capability for the exchange of data with adjoining
communities or across disciplines.
NIMS Revision affect on ICS-700
As the NIMS documents endures revision, IS/ICS courses will be updated
to reflect all changes in key terminology, concepts, and principles.
However, at this time, those personnel who have already completed
training do not have to retake these courses.
For example, as the IS-700 NIMS: An Introduction web-based training
course will be revised to reflect the changes to the NIMS, emergency
management personnel who have already completed ICS-700 training will
not be required to re-take the course. However, FEMA’s Incident
Management Systems Division urges everyone, particularly those who have
completed IS-700, to review all changes outlined in the NIMS Notice of
Change document and the Quick Reference Guide upon their release.
